A Hempstead family is asking for help to raise money to buy a wheelchair-accessible van for their two children with rare health conditions.
Paul Navarro, 17, and his sister Adryana, 10, both have spina bifida, a birth defect where the spinal cord hasn't developed properly. Paul can sometimes walk on his own, but Adryana completely relies on her wheelchair.
Now that Adryana is getting older, her parents Karen and Paul Navarro Sr. say they struggle to get her in and out of the car to take her to school and doctor’s appointments.
With health conditions of their own, the parents say they can barely lift Adryana out of her wheelchair to get her in their car - sometimes even dropping her.
Paul Jr. came up with the idea to start a GoFundMe page to raise money so his parents can buy a wheelchair-accessible van to make their lives easier.
"Paul's starting college. While he could take Able Ride, it would be so much easier to get him to and from school. Our biggest hope is for Adryana. I can't have her stuck in the house, she needs to get to the doctor. It's very hard to keep hurting her and dropping her. And she deserves to be like every other kid,” says Karen Navarro.
The family says they've raised $7,000 so far and hope get to $50,000 to buy the van.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family.
