A family of four and their seven dogs narrowly escaped from their burning home in Medford Wednesday night.
The incident occurred on South Haven Avenue just after 8 p.m.
Brookhaven's town fire marshal says the family's pit bull alerted them to the fire after almost breaking through a door.
Neighbor Raegan Offerman told News 12 Long Island that his father was able to help the unidentified family rescue three of the dogs over a shared fence. He says firefighters rescued the remaining animals after arriving at the home.
"I'm really grateful that everyone got out, but it's still devastating. They lost everything," says Offerman.
The fire marshall says a space heater was the cause of the blaze.
