Today marks the somber anniversary of the Trans World Airlines Flight 800 tragedy that killed all 230 people on board.
It was on July 17, 1996 that the 747 jumbo jet exploded and plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches just 12 minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The jet was headed to Rome, with a layover in Paris.
Fourteen of the 230 people onboard were Long Islanders.
Some believe the plane was shot down, but a federal investigation concluded a spark in the center fuel tank caused the deadly blast.
