The body of a fallen Marine killed in Iraq returned home to Sag Harbor Saturday en route to its final resting place.
LCpl. Jordan Haerter, 19, died earlier this week in Iraq. Military officials told his family his last act was that of a hero, firing at suicide bombers in order to save others.
As his body returned, much of Sag Harbor lined the route back to town.
Police cars lined the Southern State by Route 110 with officers saluting in honor of Haerter. Firefighters also paid tribute, draping an American flag on a truck near the William Floyd Parkway. They also gathered near the Shinnecock Canal in a sign of respect.
"His father was my best man," said Joseph Ambrose, a North Sea firefighter paying tribute. "It really hurt the other day when I heard this ? but I'm glad he's a hero."
A large flag was draped across Sag Harbor's Main Street while hundreds of residents lined up with individual handheld flags also.
Friends hope the turn out will be a source of comfort to Haerter's family. His funeral is planned for Monday.
