Family and friends said their final goodbyes Tuesday to a soldier from Elmont who was killed while serving in Iraq.
Spc. Andre Mitchell, 25, was laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery. He died on July 31 after his Humvee flipped.
During the ceremony, Mitchell was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Mourners said the honor is an important one.
Mitchell entered the service in 2006. Those who knew him said that the move was a surprise, but they supported him nonetheless and were proud of his decision.
"In high school, he seemed like such a rebel that the military wasn't his taste, but he always said if he had to he would fight for his country," said family friend Curtis Ranseille. "I guess he made his choice."
Mitchell is survived by both his parents and a younger brother.
