Fairfield officials celebrated a new rotary in town Friday, along with their commitment to prevent traffic accidents and fatalities.

The rotary is located at the intersection of Redding and Dunham roads.

Officials also announced they have signed the Vision Zero Pledge.

The goal of the pledge is to eliminate the all roadway deaths and injuries over the next 10 years.

Officials say by signing the pledge, they are sending a message that traffic deaths and serious injuries are unacceptable and preventable.

Fairfield police say they have made multiple safety improvements to Redding Road, including increasing patrols in the area, adding roadway markings, reducing the speed near Dwight Elementary School and adding additional fog and sign lines.

Redding Road has been the site of two fatal accidents - one in 2020 and one in 2023.

The town's police chief tells News 12 the rotary will help prevent future incidents.

"What we are seeing is that many more municipalities are using them throughout the state and having much success in reducing speed, reducing collisions and reducing conflict points in intersections," says Chief Robert Kalamaras.

Fairfield has also received $1 million in state funding to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety in the town's Greenfield Hill area and install traffic calming measures along Redding Road.
