Facebook is rolling out a new tool to help alert users of unsafe conditions, such as an active shooter situation.
The nationwide alert system is essentially the social networking version of a smartphone's emergency alert system, which notifies users of Amber Alerts and flood warnings.
Facebook said the local alerts feature will become available to all U.S. governments and first responders who run a Facebook page by the end of the year.
The feature allows government and emergency officials to send local alerts to their communities so that Facebook can amplify the alerts and reach people faster and more efficiently in times of crisis.
