The FAA is issuing a warning to passengers flying the friendly skies -- if you become unruly, you may face a fine of up to $35,000.
FAA officials say there has been an increase in incidents involving passengers becoming unruly, and sometimes violent with each other or with the cabin crew.
This year alone, there have been more than 3,200 unruly passenger reports. Of those reported nearly 2,500 have been for refusing to wear a mask.
Dr. Michael Canders, the director of the Aviation Center at Farmingdale State College, is training the next generation of pilots. He says students are taught to safely land the plane as quickly as possible if chaos erupts in the cabin.
"I would certainly describe a violent altercation in the back of the aircraft as an emergency," says Canders. "So, they would get help from air traffic control to get the aircraft safely on the ground."
Canders says any deterrent to cease bad behavior is important.
Passengers at MacArthur Airport say they hope the hefty fine will prevent future outbursts at 35,000 feet in the air.
The face mask requirement comes from the federal government, and it covers all modes of transportation. It's set to remain in effect through mid-September.
