The National Retail Federation says it expects people to spend 3 percent more money this holiday season -- but less than usual on gifts for friends, family and colleagues.
Experts say stagnant wages and bargain hunting may be to blame, even though the holiday shopping season is already underway in the beginning of November.
"I'm just looking around, scouting and getting the best prices," Michael Sheppard, one early shopper, told News 12 Long Island.
In another poll, CreditCards.com found that only about half of shoppers plan to spend $50 or more on their most expensive gift.
"Why do we need to spend a lot of money on them?" asked shopper Alicia Marciano.
The poll also found that female shoppers spend less than their male counterparts during the holidays.
