The gas tax holiday in Suffolk County is coming to an end on Thursday, , which means you might wind up paying more at the pump this winter.
The tax break went into effect in June when gas prices were nearing $5 a gallon. The county tax break was saving residents around 2-3 cents per gallon.
Suffolk County is not extending the program, which means prices could tick up a bit.
Suffolk's sales tax rate is 4.25%. With the gas tax holiday in place, everything over $3 per gallon is tax free.
Robert Sinclair Junior, with AAA, says the average price for a gallon of regular on Long Island is $3.66. He says he’s not very optimistic about where gas prices are likely heading.
“I just think it's going to get worse. It's not going to get that much better for drivers this winter. It could maybe by a few cents per gallon, but it could be because of lower demand,” he says.
According to a Suffolk County spokesperson, state law requires gas tax holidays to be issued quarterly. That means the next one could not happen until March.
Tax breaks from New York State and Nassau County are both still in effect. They are set to expire at the end of the year.
