One Nassau County school district will be having a snow day in May - and it's all thanks to a determined student.
Jericho High School junior Ethan Brown spoke at a school board meeting in March. He argued that the Jericho district has one of the longest school calendars in the state at 186 days, well above the requirement of 180 days.
"Having a snow day in May will allow students and faculty and teachers who work so hard to have a day off from school," Brown says.
Superintendent Henry Grishman says May 26 will officially be called the "Ethan Brown Snow Day."
All school buildings will be closed on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Teachers and support staff will also be off.
"The kids work so hard, our staff works so hard, and I think for the good of the order, it's good to say, 'Thank you, we appreciate all of the good work you've done this year,'" Grishman says.
The Jericho Union Free School District does not have snow day built into the calendar so it's not clear if an extra day off in May will ever happen again.
Brown says he'll be sure to make the most out of this year's snow day.
"I was so thrilled and full of joy," Brown says. "The next day in school I was getting congratulations, thank you, from so many students."
The high school junior says he initially decided to go before the school board to work on his public speaking skills. He says the experience showed him what he could accomplish.
The district will send out robocalls for the snow day in May. They plan to have Brown join the superintendent to record that call.
