The former Suffolk police chief who was convicted of assaulting a suspect and covering it up is seeking to serve his sentence near his ailing mother.
Newsday reports that James Burke is requesting to do his time a federal prison in Otisville, in Orange County.
Burke says his mother, who lives in St. James, is battling cancer and can't travel long distances.
Burke was sentenced to 46 months behind bars after being convicted of beating a suspect who stole his personal duffel bag, and then conspiring to cover up the crime.
