Smithtown?s former chief building inspector was in court Tuesday to face a 42-count indictment on charges of bribery and coercing an employee to falsify documents.
Robert Bonerba, 58, is accused of falsifying documents on town building projects in exchange for receiving cash and gifts from contractors.
Prosecutors say multiple contractors admitted they paid Bonerba for special treatment. Two of them, Frank Esposito and Robert Fitzpatrick, have already pleaded guilty to charges.
Neither Bonerba nor his attorney had any comment after Tuesday?s arraignment. However, the attorney did say he would be prepared to make a statement in the future.
Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota says the two-year corruption investigation will continue to broaden. Bonerba faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted.
