A former Suffolk police sergeant was sentenced today to one to three years for stealing money from two Hispanic drivers.
Scott Greene was convicted in January of two felony counts of grand larceny after a jury found he targeted the motorists, pulled them over and stole from them.
Greene read from a lengthy statement today at his sentencing and apologized for his crimes.
"I took from those who I was meant to serve," said Greene.
Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho says Greene's apology in court is what spared him from a maximum sentence. Prosecutors had recommended a maximum sentence of up to four years.
Greene has been indicted in a separate case that features similar allegations. Prosecutors say there may be as many as 20 additional victims in that case. A judge will consider a plea deal next month.
