A woman tasked with providing medical care to inmates at the Nassau County jail is accused of smuggling drugs and weapons into the facility.

Prosecutors say 25-year-old Chantiel Cox was arrested after giving razor blades and synthetic marijuana to at least two inmates between October and December of 2015. Cox was hired by Armor Correctional Health Services, an outside medical provider contracted by the county to handle medical care at the jail.

The Nassau County district attorney says the arrest could be a red flag about jail operations. "Obviously this raises concerns about the oversight and security at the jail," says District Attorney Madeline Singas. "This is part of a bigger investigation; there were two other arrests made."

The two others who were arrested did not work at the jail, but are accused of giving Cox money to smuggle the contraband to the inmates, who had alleged gang connections

Singas says there are security measures in place that require jail employees to be checked for items, but those procedures are now under review, she says.

Nassau Correction Officer Union President Brian Sullivan says it is time to cut ties with Armor, the company that hired Cox. However, a spokesperson for Nassau County tells News 12 that it cannot simply sever ties with Armor without subjecting taxpayers to potential liabilities.

Cox pleaded not guilty at her arraignment. She could face up to seven years in jail if convicted.
