Parents were shocked to find out a seventh-grader brought a loaded gun to Oregon Middle School in Medford Thursday.
Police say the 12-year-old took to school a 9 mm glock that belongs to his father, a retired NYPD cop. They say he showed off the gun to children at his bus stop and some friends in school, but none of them reported him to officials. According to police, they do not believe the boy made any threats with the weapon. While the superintendent states the district will press charges, the boy has not been arrested yet.
Federal law mandates a suspension of at least one year for bringing this type of weapon on school grounds. District officials say a panel will soon discuss a longer suspension. Parents who found out Friday say they are devastated by the news and are very concerned for their children's safety.
