Long Island beaches may be closed less frequently this summer due to lower federal beach quality standards.

Critics, including Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington), say the new standards are too lax and will result in beaches staying open when they should be closed. A report from the Natural Resources Defense council highlights that the EPA acknowledges one in 28 swimmers could become ill by swimming in water that passes its standards.

A pair of New York environmental groups is suing the EPA over the new regulations.

As it stands, Nassau beach closures only go into effect after a heavy rain.
