Environmentalist say an abundance of seaweed on the shores is an indicator of the pollution in the bays.

An abundance of seaweed has been deposited on the beach this year and bathers say it is very noticeable.

Environmentalists claims the seaweed is growing fast because of the Bay Park sewage treatment plant. They believe the outflow of pipes is releasing so much nitrogen that it is making it grow like crazy.

However, Hempstead officials say they believe the seaweed is growing and being deposited by the tides.
