Gov. David Paterson rejected Broadwater Energy?s plan for a liquid natural gas terminal on the Long Island Sound Thursday, but some environmentalists are concerned the project could still be built.
The North Fork Environmental Council showed a film in Southhold Saturday detailing the potential dangers of liquid natural gas terminals. The 48-minute documentary showed viewers what could happen if a terminal was struck by a ship or attacked by terrorists. Organizers hoped the film would continue building support against the project.
?It?s like putting a bomb in the bay,? said Lisa Vogelsonger.
A Broadwater spokesperson said the U.S. Coast Guard had deemed the project to be safe and that the company will continue efforts to make the project a reality. Broadwater officials will take their arguments to the U.S. Department of Commerce and say they remain determined to provide Long Island residents with efficient energy, despite protests.
