An elderly man riding his bicycle caught fire and burned to death Thursday night in Bethpage.
Police say the victim, 87-year-old Joseph Rusin, was smoking a cigarette when his nylon jacket caught on fire. Rusin tried to put out the fire by rolling around on a front lawn. FedEx worker Ron Maisch also tried to help by spraying him with a fire extinguisher.
"I can still smell the flesh, it was burning off of him," says Maisch.
Rusin was transported to NUMC's burn unit, where he later died.
