The Eastport South Manor School District is moving forward with a controversial surveillance system.

The school board approved a contract with Flock Safety during Wednesday night's meeting.

Police departments across Long Island say Flock cameras can help solve crimes, locate missing people and identify vehicles connected to investigations.

Flock Safety also says its technology can help schools identify vehicles and respond to active shooter situations.

But the technology has raised concerns about privacy, including how the data collected by the cameras is stored and used.

Some community members are also questioning who will have access to that information and whether the data will be used strictly for law enforcement purposes.

"For safety purposes, being near the school might be a good thing." said Maryann Lamneck. "But what are they doing with all the data they are collecting and is it strictly for law enforcement?"

The district has not said when the cameras will be installed.
