Liberty Water customers could soon see higher monthly bills under a proposed rate increase, and local officials are urging state agencies to reject the request.

Many customers say they are concerned about the potential impact on their budgets.

"I think it's ridiculous," said Angela Liotti, a Bellmore resident. "I think it's too much."

"Everything's going up so I'm not surprised," said Leslie Hendrix of Merrick.

Liberty filed a request with the State Public Service Commission in May seeking a rate increase.

If approved, the company estimates customers in Lynbrook would pay an additional $27.77 per month. Customers in Sea Cliff would pay about $26.89 more per month, while customers in Merrick would pay approximately $21.20 more.

"People are paying too much for water that have Liberty Water, and the idea that they're looking for even more is outrageous," Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti said.

As News 12 has previously reported, rate hikes are not new for Liberty Water customers.

In 2021, the state created the South Nassau Water Authority to facilitate a public takeover of the water system and stabilize rates. However, the authority and the private company remain in the negotiation phase.

Liberty New York Water says revenue from the proposed increase would be used for iron and PFAS removal treatments, as well as replacing water mains and lead service lines.

Some customers remain frustrated by the prospect of another increase.

"They've raised it a lot and it's difficult," Liotti said.

Residents will have opportunities to voice their opinions during upcoming public hearings.

Two in-person public hearings are scheduled for Nov. 18.

The first will take place at noon at the Merrick Public Library Community Room, and the second will be held at 5 p.m. at the Lynbrook Library Community Room.

Two virtual hearings are also scheduled for Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
