East Meadow firefighters spent Sunday fighting a fire at their headquarters, but officials say it could have been much worse.
About 100 firefighters responded to the flames at the firehouse where only EMTs and paramedics work. Fire Chief Christopher Sala says responders were able to save two ambulances. However, a burned ceiling, walls, electric outlets and office equipment add up to $100,000 worth of damage.
Officials say the fire, which started in a work area, was extinguished in about 30 minutes. They say virtually fireproof cinder block walls stopped flames from spreading. The Nassau fire marshal is investigating the cause.
