An East Hampton mom accused of fatally mowing down a priest with her minivan is behind bars Thursday and facing multiple charges.
Police say 42-year-old Karen Fisher was driving drunk Tuesday night when she struck 79-year-old Monsignor William Costello, who was out for a walk. Authorities say Fisher's blood-alcohol reading was more than three times the legal limit at the time of her arrest. Police say Fisher was driving with a suspended license from a previous DWI arrest in April, where her blood alcohol level was about four times the legal limit. Fisher was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and driving with a suspended license.
At St. Anne?s Church in Garden City where Costello lived for the past eight years, friends and parishioners remembered the kind monsignor as energetic but quiet. Many sobbed, saying the tragedy is a terrible loss for the church.
