It survived a recession, the pandemic and even a Starbucks that moved in right across the street.

News 12's Doug Geed takes you to a beloved East End coffee shop.

Aldo Maiorana opened Aldo’s Coffee Company in 1987 as a specialty food shop, but later it became a restaurant before finding his niche.

Aldo’s now offers coffee, biscotti and scones -- all of them extremely popular among his loyal customers.

Aldo could be called an artist when it comes to food and drink. He's particular about what he serves, but his fans will tell you everything he serves is high-quality, including his biscotti.

“Biscotti is basically a cookie except that we bake it twice. So you bake the loaf, you slice it and then you bake again,” says Maiorana.

Always popular locally, the biscotti became famous when featured in the luxury food magazine Dean and DeLuca.

"With Dean and DeLuca we sold in Japan for many years,” says Maiorana.

Then there's the croissants and scones and his coffee beans. The beans come from around the world and he ships his coffee bags all around the country.

Others prefer to drink the coffee on sight and you can't blame them.

Aldo's is located in the heart of picturesque Greenport, next to the carousel, on the harbor.

When his back patio fills up, people stroll around the park coffee and scone in hand.

"In the summertime some people wait 30 minutes for a cup of coffee. And they're out the door, and they're very happy to get one cup of coffee to go in a paper cup,” says Maiorana.
