A new state law will require Internet retailers to charge sales tax on purchases made in New York starting June 1.
Local retailers say they stand to benefit from the law, which could deter shoppers who see buying online as cheaper.
Some shoppers don?t seem to mind either. "You hear more taxes, but what more am I getting for my dollar?? asks Dan Frazer, of Bethpage. ?I don't mind paying taxes, but I want something back for them."
Others say they probably won?t shop online as often as they used to once the new law takes effect.
State budget officials estimate the taxes will bring in $50 million this year and $73 million in following years. They say the money will help balance the budget.
