The man charged in the death of a popular Westbury doctor was found not guilty of manslaughter Friday, but found guilty of the lesser charges of criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
Mayer Sadian, 20, was accused of hitting Dr. Jeffery Siegel, 48, and leaving him to die in July 2007. The doctor was crossing Mineola Avenue in Roslyn Heights to pick up pizza for his family when he was struck by Sadian, prosecutors say.
According to accident reconstruction and witness testimony, the gold Honda Accord was traveling at more than 60 mph when Dr. Siegel was hit. The doctor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Siegel's wife says justice was not served with the verdict. "It doesn't give any justice to his life, the brutality to which he was killed," says Dr. Louise Spadaro. "We have three young kids who will go on without their father."
Sadian's attorney plans to appeal the verdict. He says Sadian admits he left the scene of the accident, but claims he was not the first person to hit Siegel.
Based on the two felony convictions, Sadian will face a maximum of 11 years in prison. He has been remanded back to jail until he is sentenced Dec. 17.
