The driver of the car that plunged off a pier in Bay Shore earlier this week died in the hospital Friday.
Police divers at the scene were able to pull the driver, identified as 68-year-old Margrit Mueller, of East Islip, from the water. She was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest and was listed in critical condition.
The passenger, Ellen Halvorsen, 66, of Bay Shore, was also extricated from the car and subsequently died at Southside Hospital.
Police say it took longer than usual to identify one of the women because they had trouble finding her relatives. Police are still trying to figure out the circumstances that caused the vehicle to drive off the dock, but say without a witness it will be difficult.
