Driver charged after car nearly flipped into Great South Bay
A woman is accused of driving while intoxicated with her son in the car after her vehicle flipped onto its side, landed on a strip of rocky shore and teetered over the Great South Bay, trapping the pair.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. Friday night at the end of the Robert Moses Causeway near Field 2, by the entrance to Democrat Point Beach.
The driver, identified as Raquel Warburton, of West Babylon, was trapped inside the vehicle with her juvenile son, police say.
West Islip Fire Department crews worked to free them, and they were hospitalized for evaluation. They had been wearing their seat belts, officials say.
A dog was also in the car. It broke loose during the rescue and swam off, and firefighters were unable to locate the dog after a search. Fire officials say the dog, named Remy, appeared to be a labrador and is still missing.
Warburton is being charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law and endangering the welfare of a child.
