A Suffolk County doctor is accused of illegally prescribing pain pills to patients who didn't need them.

Officials say Carmine Mandarano, 61, of Northport, surrendered to DEA agents Thursday morning. Mandarano has a practice in East Islip.

According to the DEA, Mandarano wrote more than 300,000 prescriptions for oxycodone pills over a two-year period. They say this is an extremely high number for a family practitioner who specializes in asthma, allergies and immunology.

His attorney says Mandarano prescribed the drugs legally.

Mandarano was released on a $500,000 bond, and agreed to surrender his DEA registration card authorizing him to write prescriptions. He can still practice medicine.

Officials say no plea was entered, and no next court date has been scheduled.

If convicted of illegally prescribing vicodin and oxycodone prescriptions, Mandarano faces up to 20 years in prison.
