A Baldwin doctor was arraigned on charges that he sold prescriptions for a profit.

Dr. Anand Persuad was taken out of his office in handcuffs earlier Tuesday morning. He is accused of selling prescriptions for the highly addictive narcotic oxycodone.

State attorney general investigators say Persuad would receive cash for prescriptions by people who weren't his patients. Between 2011-2012, Persuad allegedly saw as many as 5,800 patient visits where he sold prescriptions.

According to investigators, Persuad sold the scripts for $250 apiece and made about $1.4 million in cash, which is currently unaccounted for.

A judge ordered Persuad to be held without bail. He is facing two felony counts of criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance. Persuad faces 15 years behind bars if convicted.

Persuad is due back in court on Thursday.
