Dozens of dogs and cats are in desperate need of homes ahead of the possible shutdown of a rescue group shelter.
Friends of Freddie is a nonprofit rescue shelter that's been based in Middle Island for the past three years. It currently houses more than 100 dogs and about 40 cats. The facility is now condemned, meaning those animals will have nowhere to go starting Friday.
Leandra Conde, of Friends of Freddie, says Town of Brookhaven officials came in Wednesday and shut them down for not having a certificate of occupancy - or CO. She says the town also slapped them with a list of fire code violations.
Conde says an architect is working on plans to get the facility a CO. In the meantime, she says her group is trying to find immediate fosters to care for the animals.
Earlier this month, a fire killed more than a dozen dogs and cats inside a building not far from the shelter - another building that the Town of Brookhaven says did not have the proper permits.
