A traditional Fourth of July run in Oakdale has been canceled.
Organizers say the ninth annual Oakdale Firecracker 5K race was canceled due to the pending sale of the Dowling College campus, which is where the race is held.
"We regret there were too many uncertainties with too little time left to define things, so we decided it would be better to cancel a week and a half out than try to make it happen and not succeed," said Ron Beattie, president of the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce.
According to a Newsday report, an initial deal to buy the property fell through and the campus might go to the runner-up bidder.
The Firecracker race is one of nine events that make up the Suffolk County Veterans Run Series.
Event organizers say those who have registered will be receiving refunds.
