Many questions remain days after a Rocky Point woman was arrested for allegedly having hundreds of pet rats inside of her home. News Twelve's Jonathan Gordon has an update on the story we've been following all week. We've once again spotted rats scavenging through the porch days after officials discovered hundreds inside this now condemned home in Rocky Point. Today's Strong Island Animal Rescue said more than 30 of the rats from inside this home were placed with a foster, but the nonprofit raised the question of how many more rodents are still inside. At least a few were spotted again today. In response, the town of Brookhaven told News 12 it condemned the home and has requested volunteer rescue groups to. Remove the remaining rat population. Strong Island Animal Rescue says they're ready to help, but need permission from the homeowner to get inside. Once we have permission from the homeowner to go in, we can go ahead and get any more friendlies or any more rats that can be, you know, put into homes. Strong Island will be the ones to help wrangle and catch, but we cannot take anything, uh, in at this time as we are at our max. Over the weekend. Police arrested the owner of 18 Whitewood Drive, Lori Curly. She's accused of having 200 domesticated rats running freely around her home. Investigators described the conditions inside as unsanitary, with urine and feces on the floors, walls, and furniture, as well as a pungent smell of ammonia in the air. According to court documents, Suffolk County police responded to the home on December 18th and found Curly's 3-year-old grandson in the home in just a diaper surrounded by the animals and their weight. Officials have not yet said why they made the initial visit, why the child was left in the home, and what prompted them to return more than 3 weeks later on January 3rd when Curly was arrested. Curly was charged with animal cruelty, two counts of neglect, as well as endangering the welfare of a child stemming from the December 18th incident. Curly pleaded not guilty to all of those charges and is scheduled to be back in court on January 23rd in Rocky Point, Suffolk County. Jonathan Gordon, News.

A Rocky Point woman is facing charges tonight in connection with an allegedly filthy house overrun with pet rats. News 12's Cecilia Dowd has the story. This rat is one of approximately 200 domesticated rats, according to court documents, both alive and dead, discovered at this Rocky Point home. I feel disgusted. We're very upset. There was allegedly rat animal waste throughout the first floor of the home located on Whitewood Drive. Laurie Curly is now facing charges in connection with neglect of animals. is accused of letting her 3-year-old grandson live in the home for several weeks in the unsanitary conditions. The little boy was captured on police body camera footage in just a diaper, sitting and walking throughout the house. The floors covered with rat feces and urine. That's according to court docs, which also said rats were captured in the video, walking around freely. One neighbor is so concerned, she tells me that. She's thinking of getting her own exterminator. I saw two rats on the porch of the home Monday. It's unclear how many remain at the house. I feel more bad for the rats, if anything. Like I am sympathetic to them, really. The house has been condemned. You can see packages building up on the porch and garbage littering the lawn. We've always seen all the garbage out and everything. We didn't know how bad it was inside. According to court docs, one rat named Splinter had a severe eye injury and likely infection. A thin dog was also found to have masses on it, living in the dirty conditions. The rescue group Strong Island Animal Rescue League said in a social media post that it's working on rescuing and placing rats from the home and was seeking help. Strong Island says all the females are likely pregnant. Cecilia Dowd, News 12. Wow, now the defendant is due in court January 23rd. We're told the lawyer has not yet been listed in court records, so we called a number listed for her and left a voicemail. We'll keep an eye on that.

Animal rescue group was finally able to get inside this condemned house that they say is overrun with rats. The goal is to get them out safely, but they are now asking for your help to do it. News's Jenna Ray Gartner spoke to them about what the conditions are like. Animal rescuers say there are hundreds, maybe even close to 1000 rats inside this Rocky Point home. Now they're coming up with a rescue plan. It's overwhelming. A lot of sad situations. No domestic animal should live this way. When the Strong Island Animal Rescue League finally got inside, they were shocked at what they saw. There's a lot of injuries, probably a result of fighting, which you see with the overcrowding situations. They've got mites on their skin, so a lot of them have patches of fur that's missing. Rats were swarming through the house, living in the walls, and trying to survive in sickening conditions. It's shocking to know. That people were living in there. Police arrested homeowner Laurie Curley last weekend and charged her with animal cruelty, two counts of neglect, and endangering the welfare of a child. She pleaded not guilty to all charges. I know that hoarding is a mental illness, and that is something to remember during a situation like this, Erica Kutzing says they've taken 36 rats out of the house so far, and they're working on a rescue mission for the rest. The rat rescue community has been the most supportive community we've ever worked with. For now. Frankie Floridia says they're making sure the pets have food and water, but they're asking for people to donate or help adopt, foster, and transport the rats. We need everyone to come together as a big team. Rats are extremely intelligent animals. When housed properly, they're also very clean. They're great pets for families. Erica and Frankie say rats multiply quickly. They can have a litter of babies every 20 days, so it's a race against the clock in Rocky Point, Suffolk County, Jenna Ray Gartner, News 12.
