A dolphin has died after it was found stranded on a beach Saturday in East Hampton.
The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research says it received a call to its 24-hour stranding hotline from East Hampton police Saturday morning about the live dolphin. It was found on a private beach off of Lily Lane.
A rescue team took the male dolphin back to the Riverhead Foundation's facility, where it was given fluids to re-hydrate and blood samples were taken, the foundation said in a statement.
The dolphin's health continued to deteriorate and it was having great difficulty swimming, according to the foundation. The Riverhead Foundation says it took the most humane course of action by euthanizing the dolphin Sunday morning.
Results are still pending from the blood samples to determine whether the 268-pound dolphin was ill.
