The Department of Education (DOE) wants to change some school rules, and parents will have a chance to weigh in.
The revised conduct code would reinforce rules that restrict cell phone use. Officials also want educators to be more vigilant in reporting parents whose children have excessive absences. Other rules include considering the theft of other students' property dangerous behavior and educators would have to call police if a student commits a crime. Creating a better support system for students with counselors would also be a priority. While some parents agree with the changes, others are upset.
DOE officials say they will seriously consider concerns brought up Wednesday night during the meeting at 52 Chambers St. in Manhattan.
