Officer Brendon Gallagher was struck Sunday by a speeding driver who was ability impaired by drugs, authorities said.
Police said the force of the crash sent Officer Gallagher's SUV into a tree and then it overturned.
Gallagher remains on life support but there has been improvement, according to Dr. James Vosswinkel, chief of Trauma at Stony Brook Medicine and medical director of the Suffolk County Police Department.
Doctor Vosswinkel told News 12 that Gallagher “has a tremendous amount of support at his bedside, being his immediate family as well as his extended family in blue.”
Dr. Vosswinkel knew Officer Gallagher before Sunday’s crash. He treated him two years ago when he was stabbed on the job. He described him as “an incredibly strong person.”
Suffolk PBA President Louis Civello said this has been “devastating” for Officer Gallagher’s family.
He said, referring to the stabbing in 2022, that the family is “reliving a nightmare” and that "this nightmare" is lasting far longer because the officer is fighting for his life.
