Babylon School District sent a warning out to parents Monday saying that a registered Level 3 sex offender was living on the same block as Babylon Elementary School and Babylon Grade School.
However, relatives of Raul Torres say he never lived in the home on Ralph Avenue. They say he listed the address for his banking records.
The district confirms that it believes that Torres is not living at the address, and it sent out an updated letter to parents.
The sex offender would not be violating any law even if he lived at the home across from the schools. There are currently no residency requirements that would restrict him from living near a school.
A residency requirement was repealed about two years ago.
Some parents told News 12 Long Island that the state law should be changed.
Torres served time for sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl in 2002.
Babylon's school superintendent says they will continue to have additional security officers at dismissal and during recess.
