A developer is looking to turn a vacant oceanfront lot on Shore Road in Long Beach into condos and rental units.
Engel Burman Group hosted a public meeting to answer questions about what the area between Long Beach and Riverside Boulevards, known as the Superblock, would look like if their proposal is approved by the city.
"We're a lot different than the former owners of the property, we're not going for any zoning variances," says Steven Krieger, of Engel Burman Group.
The developer is proposing a space that includes three residential buildings, two condos – which they say will add tax revenue to the city; a rental unit of which 10% will be for people who qualify for affordable housing; more than 1,000 parking spaces, a restaurant, green spaces and a public plaza.
Darren Gallo, of Long Beach, says he has concerns on how the proposed development could affect the local water.
"We all have rust in our water and are tired of dealing with it and I was hoping that they were going to be told to improve our water structure in a way that would actually help us, not just increase the lines for them," says Gallo.
Company representatives say keeping residents informed and getting community input are part of an effort to show they have a long-term, community-centered plan.
"Our next step is to sit down with our architect, our engineers and our partners and, and sit down and see if we can incorporate some of the concerns that the residents have," says Krieger.
Long Beach residents will have another opportunity to hear about the Superblock Development proposal and ask their questions. The next meeting will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
