Residents of the Syosset Mobile Home Park have been given a notice of termination effective October 31, despite originally having a year and a half to vacate the property.
Developer STP Associates purchased the property, which sits off of Jericho Turnpike in Syosset, in April. The residents, who own their homes but not the land, were informed they'd have to leave with or without their homes in a year and a half. Rent was also increased from $500 to $750.
In a statement, the new owners explained their change of heart: "Since June, the tenants have received three letters from STP advising them of the change in rents. To date, a majority of the tenants have chosen not to pay the new rent."
Some residents said they are still in negotiations over the higher rent, and shouldn't have to pay the increased price until the matter is settled. Others, like Barbara Pedote, said they've been paying the new rent and shouldn't be penalized.
Residents said they are looking into purchasing the land themselves. Additionally, they are pushing for legislation to prevent similar events from occurring to other homeowners.
