As the absentee ballot count continues, another Democratic state senator has declared victory in their race.
Incumbent Jim Gaughran declared victory Wednesday against Huntington Town Councilman Ed Smyth in the race for the Senate's fifth District.
In a statement, Gaughran said in part, "I am humbled to be reelected by the residents of the 5th Senate District and I thank them for their support."
In Election Day results, Gaughran had been trailing, but he took the lead as the absentee ballot count began. Newsday projected over 40,000 absentees still to be counted as of last week.
Smyth has not yet conceded.
