Police say the recent charging of a Nassau officer with DWI for a year-old crash was the result of an internal investigation. However, some are questioning whether the delay could also indicate a cover-up.
Investigators say off-duty Nassau Police Officer Robert Jones crashed his car into a parked car in April 2007. Police conducted an internal affairs investigation and after a lengthy legal battle to test Jones? blood for alcohol, Jones was charged.
The district attorney?s office says at the time of the accident a DWI charge wasn't being considered. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says her office and internal affairs have looked into allegations of a cover-up and at least for now there are no plans to charge anyone else.
Jones is free on bond, but has been suspended without pay. He is expected to be back in court Friday.
