Dozens of different car styles have come and gone through the decades, but one Long Island man who's worked in the industry has outlasted them all.
Fred Winter will turn 86 years old in February and works full-time at Arnold Chevrolet Buick in West Babylon as the new car prep manager.
"They give me a list of things to do and if it don't get done, then I'm the one who gets blamed," says Winter.
Blame is something Winter rarely hears. He is at the dealership every day at 10 minutes after 7 a.m. and puts in a 10-hour day. Coworkers say he often works nights and rarely takes off.
Winter's longevity amazes not only co-workers, but also longtime customers.
"He can remember things from the 50s, the 60s. He can tell you what kind of car you bought, what color it was and he can probably tell you the stock number," says Sue Kordulak, of Arnold Chevrolet Buick.
The very first dealership Winter worked for was a Studebaker Dealership in West Babylon in 1949.
Colleagues say Fred is also quite the character, saying he used to ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle until just a few years ago.
Fred says the reason why he still works a 50-plus hour week is simple. "I just like going to work and I enjoy the work I do. I think I've got it pretty well set down now. I'm pretty secure here," says Winter.
