Former state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos was sentenced Wednesday to four years and three months in prison on corruption charges.
The Rockville Centre Republican was convicted on charges that he used his influence to secure jobs worth around $300,000 for his son, Adam.
The two had their original convictions tossed out after the Supreme Court redefined and narrowed what public corruption is. They were retried in July and convicted of extortion, wire fraud and bribery.
Dean Skelos will also serve one year of supervised release and will pay a $500,000 fine. He is expected to start serving his time on Jan. 8.
Adam Skelos was also sentenced and will serve four years.
Prior to sentencing, Skelos, 70, said he was truly remorseful and apologized to his family, as well as his former constituents. Skelos asked for leniency, claiming he and his wife help care for their autistic grandsons.
In response, U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood said she had planned on giving Skelos four years in prison, but then announced that three months would be added because the former politician had lied on the witness stand during his retrial. She said he downplayed the power of his position.
Judge Wood was on the bench during Skelos’ previous trial.
Skelos would not speak with News 12 outside of the courtroom. His wife Gail did, blaming prosecutors for her husband's conviction.
“It's difficult when they destroy your life and your family. It's a hit squad,” she said.
