Saturday marked the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's National Take Back Initiative, where people could turn in unused prescription drugs with no questions asked.
According to the DEA's Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg, the United States currently consumes 99 percent of the world's hydrocodone and about 80 percent of the world's oxycodone.
"We will lose 47,000 people this year to a drug overdose. That is a stunning number," said Rosenberg, during an event in Virginia.
Officials say most prescription drug abusers get their fix from family, friends and the household medicine cabinet.
