Crowds gathered at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip Saturday for a dance competition held for a great cause.
Part of the funds raised at the event will go toward Dancers Against Cancer, which helps families with medical costs. One of the recipients is a 10-year-old girl named Valerie, a dancer herself who was diagnosed with cancer.
Valerie had to have her leg amputated a year and a half ago, but that hasn't stopped her from dancing. She was the guest of honor at Saturday's event, where she was set to dance and to say thank you to the Dancers Against Cancer organization.
After the competition, Valerie and her family were set to attend a Broadway show in the city thanks to the organization.
