Gov. Andrew Cuomo today outlined a plan to build a third track on the LIRR's main line in Nassau.

The plan was detailed in an 82-page report. It calls for a third track to accommodate over 300 daily trains going in and out of New York City. The governor also wants seven grade crossings eliminated to improve traffic flow. Cuomo says no residential and few commercial properties will be affected between Hicksville and Floral Park and that most of the construction will take less than a year.

Four public hearings are also now scheduled to explain the plan, beginning May 24. 

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-New York) wants to increase trains moving through western Nassau and in and out of the city.

Dave Kapell, of the Right Track for Long Island Coalition, supports the plan. He also supports the installation of overpasses instead of crossings that require trains to blast their horns.

Bill Corbett Sr., of Citizens Against Rail Expansion, opposes the plan. He believes that another track would disrupt Long Islanders' businesses and lives.
