Opponents to the proposed Suffolk Off-Track Betting gambling facility in the Medford area pleaded their case to the Suffolk County Planning Commission Wednesday afternoon.

The proposal calls for 1,000 high-tech video slot games. Suffolk and Nassau are each allowed to build a facility following a referendum approved by voters in 2013 that also legalized casinos upstate.

While they're expected to generate millions of dollars in revenues for local governments, critics are afraid they will also generate extra traffic and crime.

"We are talking addiction, drugs, prostitution. There are four churches and several schools around here," said Annette Kattau, of Patchogue.

Suffolk OTB President Phil Nolan says the site of a closed down movie theater in Medford was by the far the best location officials looked at. It's right near the expressway in a mostly commercial area. It also has a wooded buffer zone between the nearest residential area.

OTB officials hope to break ground early this year.

Nassau OTB has chosen the old Fortunoff's store near the Roosevelt Field Mall in Westbury as the site of its gaming facility.
