While Long Island Rail Road recently announced that 70 percent of the widest gaps between station platforms and trains have been fixed, critics say it's just not true.
LIRR officials said gaps at Plandome, Port Jefferson, Hicksville, Cedarhurst, Lawrence and many door openings at Syosset have been narrowed. Those stations had gaps of 10 inches or wider.
Railroad critic Peter Haynes isn't satisfied. "Going from 10 to 8 inches is an improvement clearly," Haynes said. "But when the ADA specification is 3 inches, it's a long ways off from being what I would consider a real fix."
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the LIRR, said the remaining problem gaps would be resolved by September of this year.
