Multiple agencies responded to a contamination at Barnums Channel in Island Park at 3:40 p.m.
The agencies included the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Hazmat Unit, the Nassau County Police Department's Marine Bureau, NCPD's Emergency Services, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Coast Guard.
It is unknown what the contamination is or how it happened, but officials believe it is a petrochemical, such as oil, gas, or fuel that leaked into the channel, according to James Hickman, the division supervisor of the Investigations Division for the Nassau County Office of the Fire Marshal.
Hickman said it was a small contamination that extended from an outflow storm drain into the channel, which is behind Peter's Clam Bar. The contamination was minimized by the crews on site and the DEC is expected to continue testing the water.
